Okay, so let's use this:

2d8 +3

That means "You roll 2 8-sided dice. Add the numbers up, and then add 3 more."

The +3 is a modifier (will be explained later on, and will be found on character sheets, also to be explained later on).

Does that make sense so far?

The most common die roll in D&D though, is a d20 (20-sided die).
